A Scribbled Prayer (휘갈겨 쓴 기도)
Today I am going to talk about a prayer, which has gripped my imagination. It is a simple prayer straight from the heart of a famous theologian. His name is Reinhold Niebuhr.
Dr. Niebuhr was a German refuge that found a new home in America when forced to flee his homeland when Adolf Hilter ascended to power in 1933. At the time, he was invited to preach at a small church near Boston, Massachusetts. He concluded his sermon with this prayer: “God, give us Grace to accept with Serenity the things that cannot be changed. Courage to change the things that should be changed, And Wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.
”오늘은 저의 마음을 사로 잡는 기도에 대해서 말씀 드리려고 합니다.그것은 어느 유명한 신학 자의 마음으로부터 나온 간단한 기도입니다. 그는 Reinhold Niebuhr라는 신학자인데, 1933년 Hitler가 집권한 이후에 미국으로 망명한 독일의 신학자입니다. 그는 보스톤 근교의 작은 교회에서 설교하기 위 해서 초대를 받아서 다음의 기도를 드림으로써 설교를 마쳤습니다. “하나님, 변할 수 없는 것을 평온함 으로 용납할 수 있는 은혜를 주소서. 바뀌어야 할 것을 바꿀 수 있는 용기를 주소서. 그리고 분별할 수 있는 지혜를 주소서.”
It is said that as worshipers greeted the guest minister at the conclusion of the worship service, a visitor remarked that he had been particularly moved by the closing prayer ... and wondered if he might somehow get a copy of the prayer.
Dr. Niebuhr reached into his bible and pulled out a crumbled piece of paper on which he had scribbled the brief prayer. “Here, you may have what I have written. I doubt that I shall have further use of it.”

What a great mistake that turned out to be! Professor Niebuhr may have thought the prayer to be of momentary importance; but, from that Sunday on, the prayer began a worldwide journey. Today it is one of the world’s most famous prayers of the 20th century.

Here’s what happened. The visitor who requested the prayer incorporated it into the family Christmas letter that same year. Then, the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, who received the Christmas letter, liked it, too; and began to introduce it as the prayer for thousands suffering from alcohol addiction. Then the U.S. got hold of it and printed millions of copies of the prayer for its military during World War Two. Today this prayer is commonly used in funerals to console relatives. Today this prayer is as familiar as the Lord’s Prayer and the Twenty-Third Psalm.
그 방문자는 그 해 가족에게 보내는 성탄 편지에 이 기도문을 삽입하였습니다. 이 편지를 받아 본 알코올 중독자 갱생회의 설립자는 이 기도문을 수천의 알코올 중독으로 고통 받는 이들에게 소개하 였습니다. 그 후에 이 기도문은 제2차 세계대전 기간 중에 미국에서 출판되어 군인들을 위한 기도로 소개되었습니다. 오늘날 이 기도는 장례식에서 유족들을 위로하기 위해서 사용되고 있습니다. 오늘날, 이 기도문은 주기도문이나 시편 23편만큼이나 친숙하게 사용되고 있습니다.
Why has this prayer become so famous and so personally meaningful? Because this prayer sums up the daily ups and downs we face in every day life. Every one of us is confronted by two realities: On the one hand, there are the things we cannot change. There are circumstances we face that will not be changed, no matter how desperately we try. We have to learn to adjust to new circumstances because we realize we are not in control. On the other hand, there are those things we can change. Parts of life can be changed or influenced!
And in the midst of these two realities, there are the empowering, mysterious ingredients of Courage ... Wisdom ... Serenity ... and Grace! If we possess these marvelous ingredients, we can live life victoriously and joyfully, rather than being engulfed in embitterment and despair.
왜 이 기도가 그렇게 유명해지고 개인적으로 의미 있는 기도가 되었을까요? 그것은 우리의 일상생활에서 대할 수 있는 굴곡을 포괄하고 있기 때문일 것입니다. 우리 모두는 현실적으로 양면성에 부닥치게 됩니 다. 하나는, 우리가 바꿀 수 없는 것이 있다는 것입니다. 우리가 아무리 노력해도 절대로 바꿀 수 없는 환경에 처하게 된다는 것입니다. 우리가 환경을 조 정할 수 없기 때문에 새로운 환경으로 바꾸는 것을 배워야 합니다. 반면에 우리가 바꿀 수 있는 것도 있습니다. 우리의 삶의 어떤 부분은 바꿀 수 있다는 것입니다. 이 두 현실의 중간 부분에는 용기, 지혜, 평 강과 은혜 같은 고무적이고 신비로운 구성요소 들이 있습니다. 우리가 이러한 놀라운 요소들을 가지고 있다면 우리의 삶은 적개심이나 절망보다는 기 쁨으로 승리하는 삶을 누릴 수 있게 될 것입니다.
Consider first, GRACE FROM GOD TO ACCEPT WITH SERENITY THE THINGS THAT CANNOT BE CHANGED: Christians need serenity to experience the love of Jesus Christ. We need it during worship, prayer, and fellowship. Serenity, it is one of the most beautiful and heart-warming words I know. In the midst of great conflicts and anguished despair, when serenity is within our soul, it is a gift of God that generates confidence and tranquility.
Have you ever experienced great anguish yet experienced serenity? Perhaps you faced a situation that looked so hopeless yet you managed to have hope.
Were you ever sick and you recovered when you prayed in the Lord’s name?
Did you ever make a bad decision and God turned it around to glorify his name?
Well, we ought to learn from our mistakes by knowing greatness in the human spirit is the ability to cope with what happens to us in life, good or bad to trust God 100% of the time.
먼저 바꿀 수 없는 것들을 평강으로 받아 들이게 하는 하나님의 은혜를 생각해 봅시다. 성도들은 예수 그리스 도의 사랑을 체험함으로써 평강을 누리게 됩니다. 우리는 예배, 기도와 교제를 통하여 그러한 것들을 필 요로 합니다. 평강, 그것은 제가 알고 있는 말 중에서 가장 아름답고 따뜻한 말입니다. 깊은 갈등과 괴로 운 절망 가운데서도, 우리의 영혼 가운데 평강이 있다면, 확신과 평안을 누리게 하는 하나님의 선물입니 다.
여러분은 괴로움을 겪으면서도 평강을 누려 본 적이 있나요? 아마도 소망이 없는 것처럼 보이는 상 황에서도 소망을 갖게 된 적이 있을 것입니다. 병 중에 있을 때 주님께 기도함으로써 회복된 적이 있나 요? 최악의 결정을 내린 상황이 주님의 간섭으로 인하여 반전되어 주님께 영광을 돌린 적이 있나요? 하나님을 100% 신뢰함으로써 우리의 인생에 일어나는 일들을 잘 처리할 수 있는 영혼의 위대함을 앎으 로써 우리 의 실수를 통해서도 배워야 할 것입니다.
Let me share a terrific story about serenity.
A strong-tempered individual was severely injured in an automobile accident. The worse injury of all was the possible loss of his eyesight.
His recuperation in the hospital was slow. He was engulfed in resentment, sorrow and anger. However, a glimmer of hope broke through one day when a medical specialist concluded that there was the possibility that sight might be saved in one eye by a delicate surgical procedure; but the other eye was so severely damaged that it would have to be removed and replaced with an artificial eye — a so-called “glass eye.”
When the specialist consulted the patient, this sad individual surprised everyone with his response: “Okay, I consent. Let’s save one eye, and go ahead and take out the other eye. But, if you are going to give me a glass eye, then be sure to put a twinkle in it!”
Serenity is having a twinkle in your soul!
평강과 관련하여 끔찍한 이야기를 할까 합니다. 강인한 기 질을 가진 사람이 교통사고로 심한 부상을 당했습니다. 무엇보다 더 끔찍한 것은 두 눈의 시력을 잃을 정도라는 것입니다. 병원에서 회복은 더디었으며, 그는 적개심, 슬픔과 분노에 휩싸여 있었습니다. 그러나, 복잡한 수술 과정을 거치면 한 쪽 눈은 회복될 가능성이 있는데, 다른 쪽은 너무 심하게 다쳤기 때문에 유리 눈으로 교체할 수 밖에 없다는 결론에 이르자 희미한 희망의 빛을 보게 되었습니다. 의사가 환자에게 알려주었을 때 이 불쌍한 환자의 반응은 모든 사람들을 깜짝 놀라게 만들었습니다. “좋습니다. 동의하죠. 한 쪽 눈은 구합시다. 그리고 다른 쪽은 빼버리세요. 그리고 유리 눈을 주시려면 기왕이면 반 짝이는 눈으로 주세요.”
평강은 여러분의 영혼에 반짝이를 주게 될 것입니다.
Consider secondly, GRACE FROM GOD FOR COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS THAT SHOULD BE CHANGED:
Situations can be reversed. When there seems no way out, an exit will be opened. When we are ready to give up, new alternatives will break open. You’ve got to believe that by the grace of God bad circumstances can be turned around.
One woman going through troubled times said, “Oh! I wish I had never been born!” To which a friend instantly retorted: “My dear, you are not yet fully made. All of us are constantly in the process of being made.
”두 번째로 생각할 것은 바뀌어야 할 것을 바꿀 수 있는 용기를 주시는 하나님 의 은혜입니다. 상황은 언제라도 바뀔 수 있습니다. 나갈 길이 없는 것처럼 보일 때라도 출구는 열려 있 을 것입니다. 우리가 포기하려고 할 때에도 새로운 변수는 열려 있습니다. 어떤 나쁜 상황이라도 하나님 의 은혜로 바뀔 수 있다는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다. 고통의 시간을 겪고 있는 여인이 말했습니다. ‘아! 차라리 태어나지 말았으면 좋았을 것을!” 친구가 되받았습니다. “이봐! 넌 아직 완성된 것이 아니야. 우 리들은 모두 완성되어가고 있을 뿐이야.”
That is great theology. We are never a finished product. The great hands of the Creator God are still upon us, shaping us to become something new, rather than leaving our being in static and fixed state. In my brief career of pastoral ministry, I have witnessed again and again those individuals who summoned courage and wisdom to change the circumstances of their lives. It can be done! I am impressed, and I rejoice when I observe how well individuals cope when it appears that they are up against so much that doesn’t look hopeful and cheerful.
얼마나 멋진 이론입니까! 우리는 절대로 완성품이 아닙니다. 창조주 하나님의 위대한 손은 여전히 우리를 내버려 두 지 않으시고 새로운 형상으로 만들어 가고 계십니다. 저의 일천한 목회 경력 중에서도, 삶의 환경을 바 꾸는 지혜와 용기를 보여주는 사람들을 많이 보고 있습니다. 소망이나 즐거움이 없어 보이는 환경 가운 데서도 바꾸어 나가고 잘 대처해 나가는 사람들을 보면서 많은 감명을 받게 됩니다.
I believe we can change things in our personal lives, and I also believe we can change the spiritual climate of Korea to become a Christian nation in my lifetime. This is my hope, my aspirations, my dream.
저는 저의 생애 동안에 개인적인 삶뿐만 아니라 한국의 영적인 분위기가 기독교 국가로 바뀌어 갈 수 있음을 믿습니다.그것은 저의 소망이며 꿈입니다.
The People of God in our day can make a difference! Just look what a scribbled prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr has done. He is credited with offering a prayer seven decades ago that has helped to change one’s outlook on life and one’s outlook on God.
오늘날 하나님의 사람은 변화를 만들 수 있습니다. Niebuhr박사님이 휘갈겨 썼던 기도문이 이루어 낸 결과를 보십시오. 70여년 전에 그 가 바쳤던 기도문이 사람들의 인생관뿐만 아니라 신앙관 까지 바꿀 수 있게 했습니다.
Let our prayers continue to be helping people to experience the Grace of God, to discover God’s gift of serenity, and to summon courage and wisdom to be God’s agents for the world.

The great hands of the Creator God are still upon us, shaping us to become something new, rather than leaving our being in static and fixed state. In my brief career of pastoral ministry, I have witnessed again and again those individuals who summoned courage and wisdom to change the circumstances of their lives. It can be done! I am impressed, and I rejoice when I observe how well individuals cope when it appears that they are up against so much that doesn’t look hopeful and cheerful.
얼마나 멋진 이론입니까! 우리는 절대로 완성품이 아닙니다. 창조주 하나님의 위대한 손은 여전히 우리를 내버려 두 지 않으시고 새로운 형상으로 만들어 가고 계십니다. 저의 일천한 목회 경력 중에서도, 삶의 환경을 바 꾸는 지혜와 용기를 보여주는 사람들을 많이 보고 있습니다. 소망이나 즐거움이 없어 보이는 환경 가운 데서도 바꾸어 나가고 잘 대처해 나가는 사람들을 보면서 많은 감명을 받게 됩니다.
I believe we can change things in our personal lives, and I also believe we can change the spiritual climate of Korea to become a Christian nation in my lifetime. This is my hope, my aspirations, my dream.
저는 저의 생애 동안에 개인적인 삶뿐만 아니라 한국의 영적인 분위기가 기독교 국가로 바뀌어 갈 수 있음을 믿습니다.그것은 저의 소망이며 꿈입니다.
The People of God in our day can make a difference! Just look what a scribbled prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr has done. He is credited with offering a prayer seven decades ago that has helped to change one’s outlook on life and one’s outlook on God.
오늘날 하나님의 사람은 변화를 만들 수 있습니다. Niebuhr박사님이 휘갈겨 썼던 기도문이 이루어 낸 결과를 보십시오. 70여년 전에 그 가 바쳤던 기도문이 사람들의 인생관뿐만 아니라 신앙관 까지 바꿀 수 있게 했습니다.
Let our prayers continue to be helping people to experience the Grace of God, to discover God’s gift of serenity, and to summon courage and wisdom to be God’s agents for the world.
우리의 기도가 계속해서 사람들이 하나님의 은혜를 경험하고, 하나님의 선물인 평강을 찾으며, 하나님의 사자로 세상에 나아갈 수 있는 용기와 지혜를 찾을 수 있게 도와줄 수 있기 바랍니다.
May I close my sermon by reciting another prayer entitled: MY NAME IS ‘I AM.’
“나의 이름은 나”라는 제목의 기도문을 낭독함으로써 끝 맺으려 합니다.
I was regretting the past 지난 날을 후회하네
and fearing the future. 미래를 두려워 하네
Suddenly my Lord was speaking: 주님께서 말씀하시네
“My Name is ‘I Am.’” “나의 이름은 나”
The Lord paused, I waited. 주님께서 멈추시고 나는 기다리네
The Voice continued: 계속되는 음성
“When you live in the past “네가 모든 실수와 후회로
with all its mistakes and regrets, 과거에 살고 있을 때
it is hard. I am not there. 내가 거기 없으니 힘들지
My name is not I Was. 나의 이름은 과거의 내가 아니거든
“When you live in the future 네가 문제와 두려움을 가지고,
with its problems and fears, 미래에 살고 있을 때
it is hard. I am not there. 내가 거기 없으니 힘들거야.
My name is not I Will Be. 나의 이름은 미래의 내가 아니거든
“When you live in this moment, 네가 현재에 살고 있다면
it is not hard. I am here. 내가 함께 있으니 힘들지 않겠지
My name is I AM!” 내 이름은 현재의 나이니까.
